Traditionally, the skulls are used as a symbol of death and decay. This does not mean, however, that is their only possible meaning. The skull may take on many different connotations until you reach the symbolism of strength and protection. Skulls have always had a following in the world of tattoos. Just think of the classic image of a skull and crossbones, pirate icon and symbol of death, danger and rebellion.
Even the popular beliefs play an important role: in Christianity, for example, the skull symbolizes eternity: leave all worldly goods on this earth to let the soul be free in the world of the afterlife. In the Mexican tradition, the skull is used as a symbol of the festival of the dead, during which we honor and remember deceased loved ones. Often the tattoos of skulls, especially in the tradition of Old School, are accompanied by red roses, an image that represents the duality of life and death, beauty and decay, between good and evil and the understanding that every death rises from a new life.
